Dell XPS 17 (2021) review: an excellent Windows 11 laptop for creators

2021-11-26 09:16:57 By : Mr. RongYong Yue

The Dell XPS series is like fine wine-it will only get better with age. Dell spares no effort for XPS laptops; both in design and low-level computing power. This year's XPS 17 is the flagship model of the series. While Dell provides the traditional XPS experience, it has been modified enough to attract more attention. With built-in RTX 3060 GPU and 11th generation Intel chips, this is easily one of the best (if not the best) Windows laptops we reviewed this year.

The Dell XPS 17 is roughly the same size as a 15-inch traditional laptop, but it has a 17-inch display inside. In our review, we got a healthy Core i7 model, equipped with all the bells and whistles, at a cost of approximately Rs 2,74,000. This is definitely a luxury for the creator’s laptop, but after using it for two weeks, I never wanted such a bad Windows laptop. Potential buyers of MacBook Pro should read this.

Currently, no laptop is as stylish and futuristic as the Dell XPS 17. The sturdy metal chassis is highlighted by the shiny Chromium bits on the side, highlighting the wedge shape that Dell is trying to achieve here. When closed, it feels like the laptop is chiseled out of an aluminum panel. And, in a slim profile, you have four USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, all of which can drive the display and charge with the included USB-C charger.

There is also an SD card slot and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The slim profile does not leave room for USB-A and HDMI ports, but Dell has bundled a dongle in the box that hosts these ports and can fit in any USB-C port.

Open the lid and you will see that this year may be the neatest laptop deck on all machines. The traditional carbon fiber panel has a soft touch and is a blessing to the writer's hands. The entire layout provides enough space for your palm to rest and touch every corner of the keyboard. The huge touchpad is another blessing, and the large speakers on either side of the keyboard are reassuring.

However, nothing is more breathtaking than the 17-inch display, which makes one have to believe how Dell managed to put it in a laptop. It has very thin and uniform bezels on all sides; there is almost no bottom bezel to distract attention. In addition, there is enough space at the top to squeeze the 720p webcam, infrared sensor and automatic brightness sensor; there is no need for the ugly notch like the new MacBook Pro.

The overall build quality is very good, and Fit-n-finish is top-notch. Although it weighs 2.4 kg, it is not light, which can be obtained from a laptop made of metal and glass (glass on the display). In addition, the 15-inch form factor means that this is not the most portable laptop. You have obtained the XPS 13 model.

I don’t think there is any laptop on the market that is as well-designed and made as the Dell XPS 17.

My test model is equipped with a 4K IPS LCD display with touch input. With a DisplayHDR 400 rating, Adobe RGB lowest level and 94% DCI-P3 color, this is an excellent monitor suitable for all-day viewing. Admittedly not the best, because the OLED display looks more vibrant, but it has a maximum brightness of 500 nits, the colors are quite accurate, and it looks great for regular workflows.

4K resolution provides clear image quality, and I did not see any changes in wide-angle colors. The touch screen responds naturally, and the anti-fouling coating helps keep the Gorilla Glass 6 display clean to a greater extent. The hinge is sturdy to eliminate any possibility of shaking when typing.

Another area where XPS laptops do not compromise. Mine is a health-specified variant, equipped with an 11th generation Intel Core i7-11800H processor, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz memory, 1TB PCIe 3 x4 SSD storage and an NVIDIA RTX 3060 70W GPU with 6GB DDR6 memory. Although Dell lists Windows 10 as the operating system, my device got the Windows 11 update immediately after it was set up.

With all the firepower under the stylish chassis, Dell XPS 17 has absolutely no problems in handling routine tasks. My office workflow involves handling 8-9 Chrome tabs, WhatsApp Web, MS Word, Your Phone applications, and occasional Adobe Photoshop sessions; this is nothing for XPS 17. During my use, XPS 17 worked perfectly day after day. With the new Windows 11 operating system, it is fast and convenient to use. Dell pre-installed McAfee's free trial kit and several system adjustment applications; except for the McAfee application, they did not bother.

Some notable comfort features on board include a quick wake-up after opening the lid and a biometric verification system. The IR facial scanner system works quickly in 90% of the cases, and in the other 10%, there is an accurate and fast fingerprint sensor on the Sleep key. The backlit keyboard looks elegant and comfortable for long typing; although I prefer to get better feedback from the keys similar to the MacBook Air/Pro. The touchpad is responsive and works with all Windows 11 gestures. The quality of the webcam is very suitable for video calls, and the audio reception effect left a deep impression on me. Thanks for the cleverly placed microphone.

Another aspect of XPS 17 that fascinates me is the audio experience. Inside those large speaker grilles are two tweeters and two woofers. The total rated output is 8W, which is a very suitable speaker setup for ultra-thin notebook computers. Video editing may still require professional headphones, but for others, these work well. It is a pleasure to watch movies and play games with these speakers.

Speaking of games, I let XPS 17 withstand Forza Horizon 5, F1 2021 and Dirt Rally 2.0. RTX 3060 is a mid-range card, it shows; in Forza Horizon 5, XPS 17 manages the combination of high school settings at 2K resolution by default to achieve stable 60 fps gameplay. F1 2021 runs in Ultra and stays between 45-58 fps at 2k resolution Ultra settings. A similar experience comes from Dirt Rally 2.0, where the game runs well at 2K resolution and the high setting is 50-60 fps.

During these games, the laptop gets hot; the keyboard becomes unbearably hot. However, even after an hour, I did not notice any performance degradation. Considering the luxurious pricing of this laptop, I hope Dell offers RTX 3070 GPU as an option for demanding users.

A high-end laptop with high-end specifications does not mean a love for battery life, but the XPS 17 is an exception. Despite running a 4K display at 50% brightness and staying connected to Wi-Fi throughout the day, XPS 17 usually lasts 6-7 hours to cope with the demanding workload of reporters; not bad for a Core i7 laptop! I can spend most of my office hours without a charger.

It takes 1.5 hours to fully charge the 135W charging adapter from 15%. Slim charging bricks are easier to pack into the backpack. I also appreciate the LED indicator on the USB-C port; it is easy to find in a dark room.

The Dell XPS 17 passed our actual tests with excellent results, which once again proved its advantage in the world of luxury Windows 11 laptops, and even questioned all the hype surrounding these MacBook Pro models. Those who are looking for a powerful, portable and uncompromising style workstation; your search ends here. XPS 17 provides an unparalleled laptop experience in the Windows world, almost negligible.

Our opinion: Dell XPS 17 9710 is currently our best recommendation for fashion creators who are seeking the best balance between power and portability.
