Five Lakeland children and their grandmother managed to escape a kitchen fire Friday night, according to the Lakeland Fire Department.

The fire began around 5:20 p.m. on May 27 at a home on Blossom Circle East.

Crews found smoke coming from the roof vents and flames around the kitchen window.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control and contained solely to the kitchen within about 15 minutes.

The five children were all under the age of nine, with the oldest helping get the younger kids to safety.

A neighbor was able to enter the residence before firefighters responded to assist the children's grandmother out of the home.

The grandmother was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No firefighters were injured during the incident.
