On Sunday night, in the Red Oak Hills community near Interstate 435 and Midland Avenue, someone shot another person with a rifle. Shawnee police is investigating.

Shortly after 10pm on Sunday evening, shortly after the dispatcher received multiple 911 call reports and heard gunshots nearby, the police were dispatched to a home in the 6700 block of Red Oak Drive.

At the scene, the police found a Kia car on the street with a broken rear windshield and at least one rifle shell.

The officials identified a person believed to be the victim. The recorded radio traffic indicated that the person was not cooperating when questioned by officials.

The Shawnee Fire Department rushed to the house before 11pm to assist the police in erecting the ladder. A police officer can be seen climbing to the roof of the house to check for damage.

The police did not say whether they found anything.

Sheriff Joshua Bayless said that the police believed that the incident might be related to drugs, but would not elaborate on this statement.

In response to questions via email on Monday afternoon, Shawnee Police spokesperson Major Jim Baker said that a car’s rear windshield was hit as the only damaged person found.

Baker said there were no reports of injuries.

"The details of this incident are a bit rough. Our detectives are trying to gather more information to clarify some unknowns and try to identify the suspect," Baker said. "We don't think this is random behavior. The victim and the suspect know each other."

Just after 11pm, the Merriam police were sent to check an address in their city, looking for vehicles that might correspond to the shooting.

A police officer reported that he was passed by a black Ford Fusion, which matches the description of the car he was sent to inspect on the address.

Constable Merriam chased the vehicle westward into Shawnee on 47th Street. The speeding car ran through multiple stop signs, making it difficult for the police to keep up. This possible suspect car last appeared in Kansas City, which entered Kansas City from 47th Street and Niman Road northward.

Baker said: "This incident may lead to accusations of serious assault and/or gun crime." "People can assume that this is related to drugs, but until more facts are known, this can only be a guess."

The police did not state what contact (if any) the victim had with the neighborhood.

Anyone with knowledge of the incident can contact Shawnee Police at 913-631-2150 or the TIPS hotline at 816-474-8477.
