Keanu Reeves has exited Hulu's The Devil in the White City series.

As reported by Variety, The Matrix star is no longer starring in the series adaptation of Erik Larson's 2003 novel The Devil in the White City. As of writing, representatives for Hulu and Reeves have declined to comment on the matter. Currently, a replacement has not been found for the 58-year-old actor's role as architect Daniel H. Burnham. Hulu announced Reeves' casting in August 2022, with the actor also attached as an executive producer.

Martin Scorsese, Rick Yorn, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson of Appian Way, as well as Stacey Sher, Sam Shaw and Mark Lafferty act as the Hulu series' executive producers. ABC Signature is producing with Paramount Television Studios. When DiCaprio purchased the rights for the novel in 2010, the Titanic star was originally set to portray Holmes before other players joined the production. In 2015, Scorsese teamed up with DiCaprio for The Devil in the White City, marking another collaboration with the actor. The duo's previous collaboration credits include The Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island.

In 2019, development finally began for The Devil in the White City. However, the eight-episode Hulu series won't start filming until spring 2023. The official logline reads that the show "tells the true story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America's first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious 'Murder Castle' built in the Fair's shadow."

The Devil in the White City would have been Reeves' first major television role. Previously, the actor made a name for himself in big-screen productions, such as John Wick and The Matrix film franchise. Despite not appearing in the upcoming Hulu series, Reeves has been keeping himself busy with both acting and writing comic books.

Reeves recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss his new comic book titled BRZRKR. The actor also revealed his childhood dream of playing Ghost Rider if he ever entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "I think the way that the Marvel films have developed and what they are is really spectacular, and it would be great to be a part of that," Reeves said. Despite his childhood ambitions, Reeves joked he would be a perfect fit to portray his BRZRKR protagonist in a film adaptation. Reeves' recent film credits include voicing Batman in DC League of Super-Pets and reprising his role as Neo in The Matrix Resurrections. His upcoming productions include John Wick: Chapter 4 and Constantine 2.

The Devil in the White City currently has 2024 release window.
