As we get ready to begin a new year, we typically think about New Year's resolutions or things we would like to change. A new year means a fresh new start. We can’t always control what goes on in the world around us, but we can make small changes to make ourselves more comfortable. Design trends for 2022 focus on natural materials, multifunctional spaces, comfort, wellbeing, and personal expression.

The Covid pandemic has affected many parts of our everyday lives. So, it comes as no surprise that it affects some upcoming design trends. With some still working from home, the need for creativity, productivity, and multi-functionality has become more important. Just as necessary are comfort and wellbeing to sustain a healthy work/home balance.

Paint trends setting the tone for a more comfortable environment are landscape palettes. Soothing greens, blues, green-greys, and earthy tones like those found in nature help reduce stress and lower blood pressure and heart rate. They also help increase productivity and creativity and ultimately make us feel happier.

With the pandemic affecting shortages in supply chains, more emphasis has been put on selecting greener choices for décor. Vintage and antique one-of-a-kind finds will be in. The use of natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and rattan will be more popular, complementing the landscape pallet colors that are also in. For a feeling of well-being, more people are incorporating plants into their décor. Live plants encourage a calming effect and cleaner air. Another trend is curvy furniture such as sofas and chairs adding a look of comfort, breaking up that straight-line syndrome. Textured fabrics that are a mix of luxurious, chic, and cozy such as velvets and sherpas, will be popular in 2022.

Natural materials and hues are being used in design changes for replacing cabinets, countertops, and floors. There has been more interest in patterned hardwood floors, two-tone inlays, and lighter wood flooring. Color is making a comeback in the kitchen. Painted kitchen cabinets or cabinets in warm or natural hues and marble or granite countertops are becoming popular. Another trend is incorporating black accents into home design and décor. For instance, black lacquered entryway doors, black window frames, or changing cabinet handles to black. Adding black accents such as mirrors, vases, or even black picture frames adds edge and depth to more minimalist spaces.

Just as fashion has evolved in recent years, so has home design. It is more about personal expression and less about what is trendy. Typically, home trends decline, but lately the lines between minimalism and maximalism have blurred a bit, empowering people to decide on their own interpretation. Home design is a reflection of one's individuality and tastes. Your home should reflect you.
